Anyone else drooling just looking at this picture! This Nutella Christmas Tree Pastry is absolutely decadent, has minimal ingredients and will wow your crowd. The crispy outer crust, mixed with the chocolatey hazelnut spread, topped with a sprinkle of powdered sugar, is a match made in heaven. These are on our new holiday tradition’s list and I can’t be mad about it! These will be gone in a flash!
How to make the Nutella puffed pastry Christmas tree:
First, you’ll need puff pastry, Nutella, an egg wash, and powdered sugar.
You will preheat your oven to 375° and lay parchment paper on the counter. Then you will start by rolling out two sheets of puff pastry into large rectangles. Lay one pastry onto the parchment paper.
Over the bottom layer you will spread a thin layer of Nutella in a Christmas tree shape (this does not need to be perfect. Next you will lay the second puffed pastry sheet over the Nutella one.
Once you have them layered together you will use a large ruler to mark the tree where it should be cut, then use a pizza cutter to cut the markings, creating a Christmas tree shape. (With the remaining dough you can also fill it with Nutella and cut it out into star shapes to add to the dessert.)
Next you will leave a space in the center of the tree, down the middle about 1-2 inches wide. Then you will cut slits into the edges of the triangle part, leaving about an inch in between slits.
Then you will roll each 1 inch section away from you once or twice and press the outer edge firmly onto the parchment paper. (This will help it stay down while baking and not unravel.
Brush the tree with egg wash and bake in the oven at 375°F for 15-18 minutes. Once it’s done, dust the tree lightly with powdered sugar.
You can also top with sliced almonds or chopped hazelnuts for added crunch. Enjoy your festive and delicious Nutella puffed pastry Christmas tree!
Nutella is a chocolate and hazelnut spread that has been around for a very long time. It is manufactured by the Italian company Ferrero and is sold in more than 160 countries, so glad ours is on the list! Nutella is made from ingredients like sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, and cocoa powder, and it is commonly used as a spread on bread, toast, and other baked goods. Making it the perfect addition to this puffed pastry.
Puffed pastry, also known as puff pastry or feuilletage, is a buttery and flakey pastry that is commonly used in both sweet and savory dishes. It is perfect for baked goods and also delicious to top off a chicken pot pie. It is made by layering thin sheets of dough with butter and then folding and rolling them to create multiple layers. When baked, the layers puff up and separate, resulting in a light and crispy pastry that is so decadent and often used in pastries, tarts, and pies. Puffed pastry can be made from scratch or purchased pre-made from a grocery store or bakery, I like to use the pre-made kind for my recipes. It is a versatile ingredient that is perfectly paired with Nutella.

Nutella Christmas Tree Pastry
Kalani BrysonIngredients
- 1 17.3 oz Packaged frozen puff pastry (2 sheets) *thawed but still cold
- 4 – 6 Tbs Nutella hazelnut spread
- 1 Egg *beaten
- Powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F degrees. Lightly dust flour on top of a sheet of parchment paper.
- Unfold one sheet of puff pastry on top of the parchment paper. Use a rolling pin (with a little flour on it) to gently roll out the puff pastry sheet into an 11 X 13 inch rectangle.
- Spread the Nutella on top of the puff pastry sheet in a large Christmas tree shape (this does not have to be perfect) be careful not to go too close to the edge.
- Carefully unfold the second sheet of puff pastry and place it onto a lightly floured surface. Roll it out into an 11 X 13 inch rectangle.
- Gently place the second sheet of puff pastry on top of the first sheet of puff pastry that has Nutella on it. Press gently to seal the two sheets together.
- Using a ruler, outline a Christmas tree shape and cut the outline with either a sharp knife or pizza cutter.
- Place a ruler down the center of the puff pastry Christmas tree to use as a guide, leaving 1-2 inches in the middle of the tree.
- Starting on one side, make horizontal slices into the sides of the Christmas tree triangle, leaving about 1 inch in between each slice. Do this to both sides of the tree, all the way to the top. Gently lift the parchment paper with the tree onto a baking sheet.
- Starting at the bottom, twist the branches away from you, one or two times and then press the edges firmly onto the parchment paper. This will keep them from unraveling during the cooking process.
- With the excess puffed pastry dough, you can spread more Nutella inside and use a star cookie cutter to make some star shaped pastries to add to the dessert later. One will be used as the star for the Christmas tree.
- In a small bowl, beat the egg and use as an egg wash, brushing the top of the pastries. Use a fork to poke some holes on the middle flat section of the tree.
- Bake the tree and the stars in the preheated 375°F oven for about 15 – 18 minutes or until puffy and golden brown.
- Allow to cool slightly before sprinkling or sifting some powdered sugar right on top. Enjoy!
